My daughters' travel adventures yielded inspiration again! Last January they went to Tromsø, Norway in search of the northern lights. The city is 217 miles above the Arctic Circle so they didn't see the sun while they were there. They were treated to an extended period of dawn/dusk everyday when the sun was near the horizon around noon.
These buildings in the Tromsø harbor date from the early 1800s. They've been restored and house modern businesses these days, but they make for a timeless scene not all that different than the next photo, taken in 1873.
I chose to highlight the brightly colored buildings in my painting, and pretended it was a sunny day in downtown Tromsø! I also experimented a bit by drawing over the watercolor, defining the shapes and adding shadows with ink.
