Winter Blooms

Some of the places that really inspire me are obvious. It's easy to see the beauty in a botanical garden or a tropical beach. But like many of us, I don't get to visit locations like that often, so it's important to look for inspiration in the everyday places where I find myself on a regular basis. Like the grocery store.

OK, sure. It's not that challenging to get inspired when the Whole Foods flower shop looks like that. I took this photo in the middle of winter, on one of the many cold, gray days that we endured in the northeast this year. I was desperate for spring and there it was, bursting with color. The only hard part after that was deciding which bunches to paint.

I decided to focus on this close up photo. I liked the colors - the shades of pink and peach really stand out against the green leaves. Some of the blooms are more open than others, which I thought would make for a more interesting painting.

It was nice to spend the last few months, when winter was stubbornly lingering, painting these flowers. Now that it's finally warmer, there are tulips popping up in just about every other yard, but I was lucky to have them to look at all winter as well!

I'm especially happy with how the bouquet's cellophane wrapping came out. It was challenging the capture its transparency, but I the stripe pattern is an interesting detail.
